Life was good. The goal was accomplished, the contracts drawn and the down payment made.
I worked in Airon Labs Pvt Ltd, a privately-owned pharmaceutical company which was working on a highly classified project that I was a part. In simple words, let us say, I was a scientist who, along with his team, was working on one of the biggest experiments done for the survival of mankind.
And it was a huge success! Monetarily too, as we had sold the drug at an unimaginable price to a multi-millionaire.
So the next day when I went to work, in high spirits, what welcomed me was a big shock!
I was expecting a merry ambience, relaxed conversations and friendly smiles unlike the past 450-day schedule, when no one even had the time to breathe. What greeted me were empty corridors, empty cabins and empty labs.
I checked my phone twice to make sure it wasn’t a Sunday. Having confirmed, I started looking around for my colleagues and the other staff. The strangest thing was that there wasn’t even a doorman at the entryway. Puzzled, I searched the entire building, and just as I was about to head out to search the nearby offices, I heard it. The sound, like a gurgle, maybe? Or was it a grunt? Or a slurping sound? Or all of them together?
I moved towards the noise with as little sound as I could manage to make. It was coming from the basement! I pushed open the door quietly to unveil the question behind.
A number of pair of eyes greeted my sight; eyes filled with hunger … eyes belonging to creatures that I could barely recognize. In a split second, I saw three of my colleagues bent over a body whose skull was open; blood dripping from their lips, their eyes devoid of all emotions except for hunger. I saw the subject we had tested the drug on; his head swollen to twice its size because of the brain-enhancing drug, and his clothes splattered with patches of different blood groups.
In a split second it dawned on me that they had found their new prey: Me!
In the moment of utmost panic, I ran to the nearest clearing I could see, and bolted the door to the generator room. My heart thudded within the rib cage and I blinked my eyes rapidly to adjust to the dark. However, a sharp snarling made me jump, and I turned back in trepidation.
The watchman’s distorted face looked back at me; his yellowish eyes bulging, and his mouth smeared with blood. His hands were clutching the brain of the body lying in front of him, parts of which were eaten and chewed off.
The watchman slowly etched his way towards me, his hands stretched forward and lips curling with every step he took, letting out a grunt. I came to my senses and turned to run out of the room and banged straight into the herd outside.
I was trapped … trapped between the blood-thirsty zombies!
I wake up with a start, stand up, and look around, bewildered.
I am in the laboratory inside the glass cabinet, as always.
It was a dream, I realize. I feel groggy. I walk up to the lavatory to splash some water over my face.
I look up and see my reflection in the mirror.
I see the empty glass cabinet behind me.
I see my swollen head.
I see the empty cabinet.
I see my moldy skin.
I see the cabinet.
I see my pale eyes.
I see the cabinet.
I hear a shriek behind me. I hear someone say something. Something which sounded like, “Who are you?”
I turn towards the sound. I smell a nice smell. I feel hungry. I see her. I let out a grunt and drag my feet towards my food.
