“She shouldn’t even be here. Anyone who lets her in can also leave this place with her and never come back again,” he roared and his eyes emitted fire.

Lamya gulped.

”They- they’ve already co- come, w- we can’t just not let them in,” she whispered, her voice shaking.

“They? THEY? Are you saying that she’s come with more people? She must know now that she was never welcome here let alone her good for nothing cronies. Get them out of here this instant!”

“Dad, you know, as well as I do that they have a right to be here. You don’t want him to hate you, do you?” Lamya tried to convince her dad though her voice betrayed the fear and melancholy she felt at the dilemma she was in.

“Right? What right? She never had it and never will. As for him hating me, I’d never know thanks for her. She ruined him for all of us.”

“Da- dad, don’t say that. She was innocent and she still is. You can’t blame her for this too.”

“Well, what do we have here? Another one on her side? Since when have you had her best interest at heart? Can’t you see what happened to the one who gave his heart to her? She killed him.”

“You’re going too far, dad. How would she feel if she heard this? You know she’d never do that. All she ever wanted was his love, my brother’s love and she had it only for a short period of time. Do you think that he’d be happy if he knew how his wife was being treated?”

“Whatever. I think I’m going to ask for custody as soon as she gives birth to my grandchild. Can’t have her spoiling the baby too now, can we?”

“Are you being serious right now, dad?-”

Iman didn’t hear another word Lamya said as she couldn’t believe what she was hearing. She had been just going to go talk to her in-laws when their conversation made her unable to move. She had been expecting them to not accept her and ignore her or even insult her time to time, but she had never thought her father-in-law could harbour this much hatred towards her.

All she wanted was to see his face one last time before the earth swallowed him forever. Was it too much to ask for? And now they wanted to snatch her baby away from her too.

Iman wondered how someone who loathed her so much could have brought up the one who loved her to bits. She felt like screaming her lungs off and crying until her tear ducts were numb, though she couldn’t find the strength to do any of that. She even considered killing herself an option until she found the reason to stay alive.

Iman smiled through the tears she had shed without her knowledge realizing that her husband hadn’t left her alone in this world. He had gifted her with something which was worth dying for and she’d never give it up for anyone.

“Don’t worry, dear. I will not let anyone take you away from me. I love you,” she put her arms around her growing abdomen protectively as if trying to cradle her unborn child.

A stray tear met the bare skin of her hand as she whispered, ”Daddy loved you too, darling.”
