“Mommy, I am scared,” little Sara whispered in Riya’s ear.

“No baby, there is nothing to be scared of. I am here and Daddy is here too. Just go to sleep.”

“No Mommy, you don’t understand. At night when you leave, she comes into my room and sits on my bed, exactly where you are sitting right now. And she hums ‘twinkle-twinkle little star’ till I fall asleep. She doesn’t leave. Even though I hide completely beneath the bed cover, she doesn’t go. She sits and hums and giggles and calls out my name. And yesterday, when I was playing with Nana outside on the porch, I swear, I heard the sound of feet running behind me wherever I ran. But, as soon as I stopped running and looked back, I could see nothing. And it was so cold! My breath was misty, as if it was winter. But it is May, Mommy.”

“Who sweetie, who are you talking about?”

“The girl who has been living with us for the last two days; she has big bright blue eyes and curly brown hair…she is just like me, Mommy. But she is so tiny, and she claims to be my little sister. She is always around me. Can’t you see her? She calls daddy ‘Daddy’, and even says that you are her mother.”

“Now, listen to me sweetheart,” Riya said, alarmed, “You don’t have any sister, okay? Next time, whenever you see her, just call me. Now go to Daddy’s room and sleep. I’ll be there in a minute.”

“Daddy, Mommy asked me to come and sleep with you,” little Sara mumbled to Raj.

“What are you saying, sweetheart?” Raj asked, bewildered.

“I told Mommy that I am scared of the little girl who comes to my room at night and calls herself my sister. So she said that I should come and sleep with you. Please, can I sleep here Daddy?”

“Of course, you can. Come sleep,” Raj said, shocked.

“Sorry Raj, Riya is no more. We tried our best, but I had already warned you about her pregnancy complications and the risk associated with her life. She slipped into a coma during the surgery and her brain went dead at 12:47 PM sharp. We couldn’t save the baby. It was a girl. Sara was going to have a baby sister. We are sorry for your loss,” Rita, Riya’s friend and also her doctor, said in a broken voice.
